Book Review: Fool Moon
59Fool Moon, Book 2 of The Dresden Files
If you read my review of the first book in this series, Book Review: Storm Front, then you will know I am a fan not only of The Dresden Files series, but I really like the work of Jim Butcher. This second installment in the series continues on with Harry Dresden, a working wizard/gumshoe who seems to be somewhat inept at most things except really ticking off the wrong people. And when he screws up, he really makes a mess. Fool Moon is based on the premise that there are various types of werewolves--and one of them seems to be a serial killer.
Fool Moon: The Good Stuff
Harry never seems to step forward with his right foot. Not literally, just figuratively. He quickly begins to make a mess of things in Fool Moon as he ticks off the Chicago police department, a big time Chicago gangster and even the FBI. This book moves fast and the pace stays solid throughout. The characters continue to develop and a few new characters are deftly introduced in this second installment of the Dresden Files series. Jim Butcher seems to have a rather good ability to blend a bit of slapstick humor along with some real tension. Not a scary book by any means, this series isn't along the lines of horror fiction--it is more along the lines of ... well, there really is nothing out there to compare it to. It is good solid writing, fun characters who are more believable because of their weaknesses and a great plot. If you liked the first book--you will like the second even more. If you haven't read the first, I would recommend you do.
Fool Moon: The Bad
Not much bad here. The book does require you suspend disbelief just a little because it involves not only the paranormal but also the downright fictional. But that is why it is called fiction. Butcher does a very good job making it easy for you to suspend your disbelief and Harry continues to grow as not only a likeable character but one you really root for. Some of the characters could be a little more developed but overall there is not much to complain about.
Fool Moon: The Final Verdict
Get it and Read It. The final verdict is that this rates a solid 8.75 out of 10. The characters, the plot, the pace, and the overall package all combine to make this a solid, fun book. It will give you several hours of entertainment. It is definitely the kind of book you could read a couple or three times. If you aren't getting it for your Kindle--pick it up from Amazon and get it shipped out to your house today.
