Building a Monkey's Fist

Making a Monkey's Fist is loads of fun. A monkey's fist is a style of knot that is somewhat reminiscent of a small fist. Tied to the end of a rope, it makes the rope easier to toss. A monkey's fist can be made without an object in the middle, but most often it is tied around a small or large weight. Used by sailors to toss ropes, monkey's fists also served double duty as an improvised weapon called a slungshot. This hub is all about Monkey's Fists. There a some videos that show how to make one as well as a few resources for books where you can also learn to tie them.

You can watch the following video that teaches you how, or--you can pick up a book that teaches you how to make not only a monkey's fist but a few other cool items from rope. I always use paracord for my knots--it is strong, and simple to use.

My dad was a highly skilled rigger, and knot expert. He used to tie this one for my sisters' jump ropes, but I never thought to ask him how. Now I know!

Thank you!
