2012--End of Times or Beginning of a new era?

The Mayans, an ancient American civilizations whose descendants still live in Guatemala, were an incredibly advanced group of people who used an amazingly complex and accurate calendar.

According to their calendars, the world either ends or changes significantly on December 21, 2012.  Now, you may laugh, but they also predicted, to the day, when the white settlers would first come from the ocean.  They also predicted many other events thad did happen, including the end of their own very advanced civilization.

Now, before you think, well, this is just one case of a prediction.  Many other famous people have also predicted this date as the end of our world, or the end of the world as we know it.  These include Nostradamas, Merlin, and the famous I-Ching.  Read on to find out some more interesting facts.

Coincidence or Real?

It fascinates me that so many ancient cultures and people prophesied about the date, December 21, 2012.  Is it real?  Does it mean an end to the world or just a change in the world we live in?  That is for each individual to decide.

Will it End?

Do you think the World as we know it will end on December 21, 2012?

Interesting predictions. At the rate our world is changing, it will definitely be different in a few more years!

Prophecies are the same as time travel into the future. Neither of them are possible. Predicting the odds of a particular event from existing data is based on mathematics and is not that accurate but occasionally a prediction may find a match.

These predictions are not prophecies and the Mayans missed some major events that they should have prophecized, like World Wars and the Nuclear Bombs, don't you think those were life changing events.

issues veritas--I do think those were life changing events. I would bring up the point that perhaps they didn't prophecy about them because they weren't within their cultural future (if that makes sense). The Mayans were essentially destroyed as a people well before these events occurred. The remnants of their people have not been particularly affected by either of those two events you mention. But, if the world ends or changes drastically, all people will be affected, including any remnants of the Mayans.

Very interesting ... 2012 does not seem all that far away. All the more reason that one should try and live in the present moment, and not worry too much about the future.

What will be, will be ...

Jaspal--that is for certain. Live the best life you can and go with it. Not much else you can do.

Nostradamus and several others who's prophecies concur with the mayans did prophesize on the atom bomb, Hitler, ww1. ww2 and ww3.  It is true that any WW4 will be fought with sticks and stones and scrap.  Even if you do not belive in "prophecies", one can look at the world as a whole, the events unfolding, the "fanatics" (like issues veritas) on the various sides, the defication on the common man and his slow awakening to the fact, one should indeed conclude that the whole S* house is likley to go up in flames. Soon.

issues veritas, your argument is a bit weak. Just because a culture doesn't predict EVERY major event that happens doesn't necessarily negate their ability to predict some of them. I personally don't believe in most prophecies (with the exception of those within the holy bible) but tdarby makes a good point that you essentially ignored: World wars and atomic bombs wouldn't have any affect on a culture that would die out far before those things. How would those prophecies be relevant? The end of the world, however, well, that's fairly relevant to every culture, no matter when it happens. Interesting hub tdarby, I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Not too far off, is it?

Paper Moon and jreuter, I very much appreciate the comments. I agree, you don't have to predict everything to be verified as someone who has predicted many things accurately.

I love this stuff. I think prophecy is completely possible, especially because time is only relavent here on earth. I definitely like beginning of new era better then end of times. Because I don't think we're close to being done.

TurnipTornado--I really like your comment about time. I think we experience time different from many entities that exist in our universe. Thanks for the comment

There's been a lot of talk about a major planetary/galactic alignment on or around that date. NASA flatly states that no such event will occur. I haven't been able to track down any certifiable scientific source that claims that it will.

All that being said, given the current state of affairs it wouldn't be too hard to imagine the course of human events being profoundly altered somewhere around the 2012 mark.

I voted "no" in your poll. The changes are happening and shifting so quickly now that at the pulse of a second it can be observed. By the time we get there it will not seem to be so drastic and it will make sense. It will not be a sudden shift but by the time we arrive, if we pay attention or not, we will know we have arrived somewhere. I appreciate this informative hub!

emohealer, thanks for the insight. It seems that things are always changing but the present seems the most "critical" at any given moment. Only later, when we look back, we realize that it wasn't as critical as we then thought.

The Mayans were observers of the skies and kept note of events that impacted on their way of life. A very interesting read.

Hi tdarby,

Well end of Mayan calendar doesn't mean end of the world. Many other predictions came and gone & the world is still intact, nothing happened yet & I am 110% sure we will pass Oct, 2012 too.

Great hub...loved the pictures! Personally, I don't think anyone can predict a certain date till the end of the world. I think when that time comes it will be a surprise to everyone. No preparing for it.
